While many renters report being happy with their housing situation, they also view renting as a step towards homeownership, according to data released last week from Fannie Mae's National Housing Survey.

One third of renters report that renting is a "very positive" experience, and more than half of them describe it as a "somewhat positive" experience. But homeowners are happier overall, with 71% reporting that owning has been very positive for them and their families.

Here's what else renters think when it comes to homebuying:

  • About half of renters think that owning is a more sensible housing choice and 57% of younger renters (ages 18-34) believe this.
  • Fifty-one percent of renters think owning makes more sense when comparing the financial and lifestyle benefits of renting versus buying.
  • Among renters ages 18-34, 49% said their primary reason for renting right now is to make themselves financially ready to own. Twenty-six percent of renters ages 35 and older reported this as their primary reason for renting as well.
